The original in home espresso machines were extra large in size and very clunky with a million different accessories to go with it, taking up much needed counter space and certainly making a big mess. These machines have come a long way over the last 10+ years and while the espresso makers are a bit larger in size than the average coffee pot, they are much less space consuming and more compact than the machines of old.
